Ranked 3rd during our Photojournalism exhibit.</p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing"><strong><span lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US">The Real Face of Homelessness</span></strong></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US"> <span> </span></span><span>Homelessness is a serious problem in our society. One may ask how such harsh situations exist in such an advanced society. With all the money and programs created to help people, it seems silly that this behavior exists. In a society where people have so much, how is it possible that there are still people that have so little?</span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span class="postbody"><span lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US">The homeless are humans, no different than anyone else. They have rights and privileges just as any other citizen. As fellow humans we are obligated to help those in need. The homeless are in need. They are not only in need of money, but they are also in need of our attention and our support. Homelessness is something that we as a society need to address and eliminate completely.</span><span lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US"> </span></span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span class="postbody"><span lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US">At present, homelessness is evident in different cities in our country. Every city has thousands of people who are homeless. But the sad thing is, in reality, these homeless people are treated as total outcasts.</span></span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US">The City of Muntinlupa was once known as a sleepy and agricultural community. What was once an <strong><span>agricultural town</span></strong> mostly devoted to cow pasture has metamorphosed into the new <strong><span>residential haven</span></strong> of Metro <a title="Manila Capital of the Philippines" href="http://www.dumagueteinfo.com/PhilippinesTravel/metro-manila/manila/9/"><span>Manila</span></a>. Muntinlupa City is located at the southwestern part of Metro Manila. It is bordered on the north by the municipality of Taguig, Parañaque on the northwest, the city of Las Piñas on the west and on the southwest part by the province of Laguna.</span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US">From an urban lifestyle, the city has now blossomed and become one of the center attractions in Metro Manila. The City of Muntinlupa has been known for its classy villages where big names in both the entertainment and political world reside there. A perfect example is Ayala Alabang where big, elegant houses and clean ambiance makes it such a wonderful place, that even foreigners choose to live here. </span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US">During the last decade, the city has undergone rapid development particularly in its Alabang district. The <strong><span>Filinvest Corporate City</span></strong> and the <strong><span>Madrigal Business Center District</span></strong> which host the biggest and swankiest residential communities and business establishments have changed the face of Muntinlupa from a once sleepy town to a bustling modern metropolis. </span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US">Some of the wealthiest and famous personalities that live in these classy villages include a <strong><span>former Philippine president</span></strong>, well-known showbiz celebrities and even the <strong><span>prince</span></strong> of an oil-producing nation. Recently, the city received the status of “<strong><em><span>Most Competitive and Improved City</span></em></strong>.” Like a precious stone plucked from the mining quarry in its raw form, then cut and polished to perfection, Muntinlupa City—the new glistening jewel of Metro Manila, is now referred to as the <strong><span>Emerald City of the Philippines</span></strong>.</span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US">But despite the glamorous and wonderful status of the City of Muntinlupa, there are still some people in the city who experience hardships. Homelessness is evident in the city despite being the “Most Competitive and Improved City” in the Philippines. These people who are homeless keep on struggling just to have a better life for themselves as well as for their families. And one of these people is Arminda Pidiri.</span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US">Arminda Pidiri, or Aling Inday as people call her, is a woman who belongs to the thousands of people who experience hardships in their lives. A 48 year old woman, Aling Inday can be seen as a strong fighter who keeps on struggling just to raise her five children. </span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US">“Mahirap ang buhay lalo na kung mag-isa lang ako kumakayod para sa aking mga anak.” As a widow, Aling Inday works hard just to have food in their table. She admitted that it was very hard for her to provide food for her family because the money she gains is not enough to feed her children. “Minsan kulang-kulang isang daan lang ang kinikita ko”</span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US">Aling Inday was not able to finish her studies. She was not able to finish elementary. As a result, it was hard for her to look for a job to gain money. But this did not stop her. She find different ways just to earn money. “Sa panghihilot ako nakakakuha ng pera. Mayroon din akong munting tindahan para makakuha ng extrang pera. Minsan naglalaba din ako at namamalantsa sa ibang tao.” People can see Aling Inday going to different places to provide service to other people. Sometimes she can also be seen roaming around while holding sacks of plastic bottles to be sold to junk shops for extra money. </span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US">Aling Inday and her family have stayed in their small house in Unity Compound for almost 15 years. The walls of their house are made entirely out of wood. They only use an oil lamp (gasera) during night time because they don’t have electricity. Their house doesn’t have a door making their house unsecured. </span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US">“Mahirap ang buhay. Iba’t-ibang problema ang nararanasan, tulad ng problema sa pamilya, hanapbuhay, atbp.” Aling Inday admitted that there were times that she already wanted to surrender. Sometimes, she can’t stop herself from crying because of the problems they encounter. “Hindi ko magawang sumuko dahil mahal ko talaga ang aking mga anak.” She sometimes even drinks alcohol drinks just to forget about the problems she encounters. “Tao lang din naman ako.”</span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US">She admits that life is really difficult nowadays because of the current economy we have. “Oo, mahirap ang buhay. Pero hindi dapat isisi ang lahat sa gobyerno. Tingnan muna natin ang ating mga sarili bago sisihin ang iba.”</span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US">Despite the problems she encounters, Aling Inday can be seen as a jolly woman. She never forgets to smile. But when you look in her eyes, you can see sadness as well as the hardships she has experienced. </span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US">In reality, Aling Inday belongs to the people we often refer to as outcasts because of their status. But it is time for us to take actions and stop this huge social problem.</span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span class="postbody"><span lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US">Homelessness has indeed </span></span><span lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US">increasingly become a huge problem in our society. It is society’s responsibility to help people get on their feet and move in a more positive direction. Homelessness is an important matter and needs government and society intervention.<span class="postbody"> </span></span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span class="postbody"><span lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US">It is time we stop ignoring the homeless and treating them as if they do not exist. It is time to put an end to something that has been a problem for a long time. Government must play a better role in helping these individuals that do not have a home. Social workers must find different means for helping the homeless. Permanent residence facilities should be considered instead of temporary shelters. Job programs for the homeless must concentrate on getting these people out of the streets and into the workplace so they can make something of themselves and not rely on the government just to give them what they need. The Society must stop fearing these people and realize that they are humans just like all of us.
